Thanks. I originally posted my suggestion off-list because I am most definitely NOT a Word wizard. I was shooting from the hip and had not tested the suggestion, so I didn't want to go on record with it.
But where the idea came from is an underlying attitude toward tools that I commend to others: I decide what squiggly black marks I want to see on the page and I decide where I want them. Then I figure out a way to make the tools available to me put those marks where I want them. I don't assume that a committee of twenty-something computer science geeks in Redmond (or anywhere else) knows more than I do about my purpose, my intent, or my needs. I do not defer to them on design decisions, nor accept their pedestrian defaults. I don't work for the tools. They work for me. In short, Workarounds 'R' Us.
