Welcome, Mike!  To the list, I mean.  Not the ranks of the unemployed.  ;)

You're coming into a tough market, but that's true of all tech jobs.  While
looking, keep in mind that the likelihood is in the range of 80-90% that
your next job will come from your personal network, and not from an ad or a
recruiter.  Immediately pump your network for info, and add more people to
it.

I go to the job boards on the *off* chance that I might apply for an
advertised job and get it.  If that was my only way of getting business, I'd
be in dire straits.

My strategy, were I you, would be to put together resumes tailored to your
skills (i.e. one for engineering, one for tech writing, etc.) and grab the
first full-time position that you can get.  Ride out the slump, (probably
another 6-12 months) then look again at your leisure as you build up your
education on the side.
