Greg,
I run into scientists who correct me on this point regularly! In my understanding, "data" is a collective noun--and singular. But they also regularly point out that the singular version is "datum". I try not to open my mouth about "data" when they're around! ; )) And of course, whenever I get their edits back, that is "corrected". So what do I know...I ain't no stinkin SME...
