I'm curious about the statement that most technical documentation is
"utterly abysmal." Is there empirical evidence for this? (I've certainly
seen many bad examples, but I'm not sure these constitute a majority.)

What are the metrics on this?

On topic, I have turned down positions where I felt there was no hope that I
would have any access to personal knowledge of the software or hardware.
Having specs is fine. Having to get various points filled in because the
product isn't ready is fine too. I'm also very willing to investigate on my
own.

However, someone does take those positions where they have zero opportunity
to empirically verify the accuracy of what the SME says and I'm sure many do
an excellent job. It's just not been my preference to date.
