Heck, there are lots of topics. Autonumbering in a variety of apps (Word v.
Frame comes to mind); building and deploying eLearning apps; estimating
projects for lone techwriters or small firms; white papers or such on
experiences setting up startup companies or independent contracting;  and so
forth. If they had a searchable "store" of book reviews, that would be
helpful as well as links to online booksellers for titles

NOTE: STC certainly sells the membership list; I get all sorts of adverts
about translation services and applications and book clubs that deal with
technical topics, so linking book reviews to book sellers shouldn't
compromise the organization's integrity.

As for the conferences, your situation is like mine. It's almost impossible
to justify the cost of the thing by the potential benefit to the company for
sponsoring me or any other STC member. Even when times aren't so
economically tough.

On the other hand, STC gets enough people or companies who shell out the
lucre so that they keep raising the prices. It's just something of a shame
that a lot of us are more or less locked out by the pricing.
