Before considering surgery, talk to several people who have had the procedure done already. I've talked to several ex-co-workers (from previous jobs, not here) who have had CTS surgery and none of them would do it again if they had the chance to go back. There are some fairly serious side effects that can limit your use of your hands after this operation.
Years ago, I heard that some docs were doing field tests of a balloon plasty procedure similar to an angioplasty but with the carpal tunnel instead of arteries to increase the size of the nerve passage instead of cutting the tendons like the usual operation. If you really think you need surgery, you might want to check out the results of those tests.
