Having only had 2 jobs in the past six years, maybe my experience isn't representative.

In my previous job, it mattered that I knew something about databases and that I could create online help. In that case, I decided which tool to buy and use.

In my most recent job, one of the requirements was Framemaker, a tool I had only some non-recent experience with. They hired me in spite of this deficiency, based on my technical experience.
