Hi,
Salaries for UK writers are quite varied.

Contracts pay more per hour but are obviously a bit more uncertain. You may
also have to make yourself into a Ltd company, pay company levels of tax +
the full rate of personal and company National Insurance.

As for actual £s, as already mentioned in another post, it depends on your
level & field of expertise, experience as a writer, area of the country etc.

IT authoring jobs are common around Cambridge and are paying anything from
£20,000 - 40,000. The same is true for the Thames estuary, London and the M4
corridor through to Bristol.
Further north the jobs are fewer and pay less £18,000 - £25,000 seems to be
common for engineering type authoring with a few senior posts advertised
around £25,000 - £30,000 ish.

If you want a regular income and steady work, go for a perm job in a steady
sector.
If you can afford to take more of a risk for high potential earnings, can
hit a job running and don't mind moving around, take as many short contracts
as you can get.

Hope this helps

Mark.
