You know, I tried that once at a non-techie cocktail party ("I write software installation manuals" ) and the person just said, "I don't get it. I mean, don't you just slip in a disk and it installs itself?"

Rather than saying, "Well actually, what I write is for telephony techinicians who install a speech recognition call routing application and connect it to an existing PBX/KSU," I just chomped into a chip and said, "Yah, it does," and walked away.

I also recently came across a job listing where experience technical writing was needed...along with the ability to type 40 words a minute. It's sad, really.

To be honest, I didn't know what technical writing was until I started working as an editor in a documentation department.

What does it all mean? Who knows. I just want some chips.
