Peter,

KM has some significance in law enforcement. The FBI got interested in the 1970's when it became clear that their turnover rate was causing a brain drain. The average stay was a year and a half. What was happening was that they would train an agent, get him/her finally up to speed, and the agent would hop off into private industry at a guaranteed salary raise, a big step up, career wise, and a significant reduction in travel, etc. As the veteran agents and supervisors were retiring, a second trend developed. No veteran agents around to train the puppies, and once the puppies knew where not to piddle, and how to hunt, they moved on to more lucrative careers. So the Bureau moved heavily into KM and decision support systems.

At least your attorney client has the sense to know he doesn't have a clue and needs to get one! ; )))

I recentlty met with an attorney who wanted his firm to implement a knowledge
management system. When I aksed him what he expected from such a system, he
admitted that he had no clue what a KM system was. He expected me to tell him
why the firm needed one.
