Do you think that how a sitcom portrays ours (or any) profession is
really going to matter?

Well, as proven on a daily basis, the media plays quite a significant role
on the opinion of the public. Does that mean that it will truthfully
portray TechWriters...neh...but as pointed out before...most people don't
know what TechWriters do, it will at least advise them that there are such
people out there.
Remember, it is just a TV show...a sitcom for that matter. It is just there
for entertainment.
As for other professions...absolutely...think about the drama on TV. ER,
The Shield, LA Law, Law and Order...I think they definitely have an impact
on the views and perceptions of the American Public.
Perception is not reality, but not everyone realizes that.
