The organisation I work for depends learning and knowledge in a very
competitive environment to win and manage major defence and engineering
projects. Bid teams are formed for every new bid, project teams are
assembled to complete the work. The company depends on the knowledge and
skills of its people, but people come and go. The organisation needs to gain
and share practical knowledge within the community of people forming the
organisation.
To most effectively improve the acquisition, management and use of this
intellectual capital (i.e., to manage its knowledge), the company needs to
improve its management of three pillars: organisational culture, systems
infrastructure, and processes.
Good knowledge management systems will work to discover, assimilate,
document, and facilitate the retrieval and use of knowledge currently in
peoples heads. Easy to say but not easy to do as any tech writer will tell
you.
Regards,
Bill Hall
