ANNOUNCE: STC 49th Annual Conference Registration is Underway!
Advance registration is currently underway for STC's 49th
Annual Conference, to be held May 5-8 in Nashville,
Tennessee, at the Opyland Hotel. The STC Annual Conference
is the largest yearly gathering of technical communicators,
translators, educators, and illustrators.
The STC annual conference is a great source for training,
professional development, and exposure to the latest and
greatest tools and techniques - all at a great value.
Highlights of the conference include:
*Three full days of conference sessions
*An expo hall full of vendors in the technical communication
field, and
*A full day of post-conference workshops.
The theme for this year's conference is "Leading the
Technical Communication Revolution," which addresses ways
of rethinking industry paradigms to remain competitive in
the new workplace.
Advance registration rates are valid until April 19. For
more information about the conference or to register, visit
the STC web site at http://www.stc.org.
STORY: Dan the Tech Writer explains why he gets so much email
"Hey Dan -" the engineer Jodie started as she swung into his cubicle. She
paused and peered at his screen. "Why do you have so many e-mails?"
"I belong to the TECHWR-L discussion list. It's a forum for technical
writers to talk about issues that relate to technical writing - you know,
to interact with people who have the same job," Dan explained.
"And, of course, you get to know people on the list. For instance, I
correspond with Ted here. He was interested in hearing more about
SnagIt, the advanced screen capture program.
"I'm telling him that not only does SnagIt offer more input and output
options than any other screen capture program, but you can also output
directly to the web, e-mail, catalog or studio. And once you have a
capture, you can include stylized captions, watermarks and borders, you
can automatically trim and scale, and you can convert and improve colors.
SnagIt really is a technical writer's dream tool!" Dan finished
breathlessly.
Jodie gave him a blank stare. "Wait. You're spending time telling him
that? You've never met him, right? You don't even know these list
people, really. I don't understand it."
"I know you don't," Dan beamed, returning to his e-mail.
