Let me address a couple of your questions...

>It is further than I would prefer to travel,
This is a choice every person has to make. What is the farthest you will
travel? Is this a number that is set in stone (e.g., you have small
children that you need to stay close to).

>it pays less than what I would like to earn

Every job pays less than what I would LIKE to earn. How long have you been
on unemployment? The longer that you have been out of work, the better ANY
job looks...

>and the work is well below my skill level.

Can you make the job better than it is? I took a job at a Large Aviation
Company in Seattle that I thought was a Sr. Tech Writer job (the pay was
definitely senior level). Within a week of starting, I was transferred to
another division (a friend of the manager) who put me in a Junior position.
I was definitely unhappy, and left shortly thereafter.

On the other hand, I have taken jobs that were below my ability, and changed
them around. When I was going to college, for example, I took a job as a
clerk/typist, and ended up becoming a corporate trainer and technical writer
(my first manual, written on an early IBM word processor, in 1986).

If you are planning on working there a long time, you may not want to take
this position. If your goal is to keep your lights on and food in the
cupboard, this may be a short-term solution.
