This controls file size because you are importing a
particular file type with a set palette and
compression ratio (if applicable). When you copy/paste
into Word, you are embedding a generic bitmapped
representation of whatever the image is into Word, and
Word does its best to represent that image, storing it
within the document in a PNG format.
