When I joined this list, I assumed it was largely comprised of people who treated each other with respect and that the questions and answers would largely be related to issues that were of professional interest to technical writers. For a long while, they were.

And they still are. The statistics that Eric quoted recently showed more than 5000 subscribed TECHWR-L members. An examination of the archives for the past few months shows:

2125 messages in January, 2002
1872 messages in February
2053 messages in March

A quick, unscientific scan gives roughly 400 active posters each month. While some of us manage to mouth off in almost every thread, most posters drop in on one to five threads each month. Most of the threads are on topic. Most of the messages are decently civil. This is refreshing, especially after hanging out in some other lists*.

The current uncomfortable situation is a blip. There have been other blips over the years---tempests in the TECHWR-L teapot. There will be blips in the future. Blips happen. One of the advantages of email over face-to-face discussions is that I can choose to tune out a blip without offending anyone.

LIFE 1 = techwriting, editing, and web stuff
LIFE 2 = early music addict
LIFE 1 pays for LIFE 2

* You think TECHWR-L has nasty personal attacks? This is kid stuff. Try subscribing to some of the classical music lists and asking about the appropriate amount of vibrato to use when performing music of Composer X. You haven't been truly flamed until you've participated in a Wobble War. Those folks get vicious.
