RE: Scanners with Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

Ask your manager the following:

1) What is the expected size of the documents that will be OCR'ed?

2) Do you expect to have to OCR repeatedly, or is it for a one-time project?

3) Is the source material bound, or loose-leaf. Single-sided, or duplex?

I ask these questions because I experimented with scanning and OCR'ing some
documents that we had that we had lost the digital files for. I bought an HP
scanner with a sheet feeder attachment.

Suffice it to say that OCR is a slow, CPU-intensive process UNLESS you have
a high-capacity scanner. These are priced in the thousands of dollars range,
but they are really what you need for volume projects. That's why I asked
about the frequency of the projects; it may be worthwhile to simply
outsource the project to firms that provide OCR service.
