IMHO, it was - and is - still very efficient.

Writing in a plain text editor means for me, to concentrate on the
pure content. There is no disturbing formatting, hindering me from
keeping my thoughts on the subject by occasionally clicking here and
there ...

Importing the plain text into (put your favorite application here) and
formatting it, is a snap after having the content finished.

Additionally I get the advantage to send a pure text file along with
the - in our case Pagemaker file - out to the translation office,
which makes this guys really happy.

In my experience, separating writing (the creation of content) and
formatting (doing the style part)speeds up the complete process.

Just my 2 Euro Cents ...
