From what I have gleaned from the archives and the
threads, for manuals one estimates approximately 2 hours per page.
However, if one did this for an article of 30 pages long it would be
quite prohibitive in cost. Any ideas.

You might start by estimating how long it took you to write a 30 page essay in university. If you never wrote a paper that long, you can begin with the longest essay that you did write. Estimate the time to research and outline your longest paper, and then the actual time to write it.

Extending the research time depends on the length that you're doing the estimation from. For example, if you've done a 20 page paper, then you probably only need to extend it by about 25% for a 30 page paper. However, if the longest you've done is a 12 page paper, then you'll probably want to add about 50 to 75%.

Extending the writing time is easier. To a certain extent, the momentum carries you when writing a longer paper, but I think that time will increase at a fairly regular rate, probably about 75 to 100 %. So, if you take 3 hours to actually write a 6 page paper, you can expect to take about 5-6 hours to write a 12 page paper, and 10-12 to write a 24 page paper.

Finally, you might want to add a small amount - say 10 -25% - to the total to account for unforeseen delays and problems.

Hope this helps.
