Depends on what I'm writing. I type so fast that I can usually keep up with the subvocal sentences that form in my mind. (I once amazed a vp by keeping up with his speech as he was talking through a new marketing piece. When he got to the end, we had a word processed file he could print and take to an imminent meeting.) When I'm doing technical docs, letters, or reports, there's no substitute for a keyboard and a good word processor.

If, however, I'm writing something creative or some piece that requires a lot of introspection, I really prefer a yellow pad and a wood pencil, preferably #1. I get tired of mechanical pencils where you constantly have to click something to get more lead, or to replace the lead that you just broke, or the tiny erasers that wear out much too soon or fall out where you can't find them. However finding a mechanical pencil is a lot easier these days than finding a #1 wood pencil.
I don't miss fountain pens one bit. I always hated the fact that they'd clog or I'd do something that caused a blot. Right now, when I have to use a pen (like for paying company bills), I really prefer the thinline imitation-Cross pens because of the weighting in my hand.
