The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
All these job hunting stories prompted me to ask a
question about fee-based recruiters. Are they worth
it? Have any of you used them with success?
I proactively sent my resume to a search firm after I
saw their ad in the newspaper, and within the week
they called me for an interview. I assumed they were
just another firm whose services are paid by
employers. It wasn't until I was 15-20 minutes into
the interview that I realized that the guy was selling
ME their services.
In addition to the usual resume help and interviewing
coaching, he claimed they could "put me in front of
the decision-makers, the people who can actually
CREATE a job for you." Yea, right. He wouldn't quote
the fee, saying it was based on the type of position I
was seeking, the job market, estimated duration of the
search, etc.
Here's the ironic part: Even if the service were
reputable, I wouldn't have used this company anyway.
The guy never formally introduced himself or shook my
hand when he retrieved me from the lobby! The way I
see it, if their employees can present themselves
professionally, how are they going to help me?
