At the moment it's not feasible for me to manually
turn them in PDFs when they are needed; this
simply takes too long, as the manuals range in size
from 30 to 150 pages.

Ideally, I need to have a situation where overnight, a

PDF version of each specified Word document
is created and placed into a specified directory.
I'd preferably like to have the PDF created with
automatic bookmarks, if possible.

Is this possible, or am I dreaming? I can't imagine
I'm the only one in this situation, and at the moment
Acrobat is driving me crazy.

Paul,

Does this mean that your computer is very slow?

I have found that I can distill a 200 page PDF in about 2 minutes and 45 seconds.

You can write a program in Visual Basic, use a program called Quick Keys for Windows, or simply print all your files to postscript at the end of the day, and start Acrobat distiller. Distiller will process the files in a specific folder and output them to a second folder.

Your script program could distribute them at that point. You don't have access to cron (you aren't on a Unix or Linux machine), so if you want a timed approach you will have to search for another program to initiate distribution.
