One answer (obviously not the only one) is that a potential investor, insurer, lender, or buyer (at the corporate level) must exercise due diligence before committing to your company. So, for example, if your company represents itself as having had 10 million dollars in sales last year, an IS0 9001-compliant product development organization, and product documentation that meets all customer needs, the other party will exercise due diligence by auditing your financial records, verifying independently the claims about ISO compliance, and interviewing some of your customers about their experience with the documentation.
