Hi,
My strong recommendations for a technical writer wanting to learn more about creating usable software application interfaces:

1. "User and Task Analysis for Interface Design," JoAnn Hackos and Ginny Redish.
2. "About Face," Alan Cooper.
3. "Human Factors for Technical Communicators," Marlana Coe.
4. "The GUI Style Guide," Susan Fowler.
5. "Designing Visual Interfaces," Kevin Mullet & Darrell Sano.
6. "GUI Bloopers," Jeff Johnson.
7. "The Humane Interface," Jef Raskin.
8. "Human Interface Guidelines," Apple Computer (see http://www.apple.com/developers/ and search).
9. "The Art of Human-computer Interface Design," ed. Brenda Laurel
10. "Don't Make Me Think!" Steven Krug.

For Web-based development, I'd add the following:

1. "Practical Information Architecture," Eric Reiss.
2. "The Art & Science of Web Design," Jeffrey Veen
3. "Website Usability," Jakob Nielsen.
4. "Mapping Web Sites," Paul Kahn and Krzystof Lenk ("IA porn" it's called...a beautiful book)
5. "Information Architecture for the World Wide Web," Peter Morville & Lou Rosenfeld.

Some of my favorite sites:

Boxes and Arrows: http://www.boxesandarrows.com
Jesse James Garrett's resources for IA and others: http://www.jjg.net/ia/
Alan Cooper's site: http://www.cooper.com
ACM's interactions magazine: http://www.acm.org/interactions/
Keith Instone's great site:
