... Most jobs do to some
extent require concentration. Unfortunately for those who would claim
"the zone," most jobs also require interaction and contribution. The
problem that I suspect many of us have encountered is that software
developers throw up "the zone" as a wall to block out interaction...

And in all of this "talk to the hand...", nobody ever
thinks about *my* zone. Jeez, I've got 75% of the
conceptual material to document a complex function in
my head and all I need is the answer to one eensy teeny
little question so I know whether to veer left or right
at the fork... <sigh>

I worked at one company in a bullpen atmosphere with
the programmers. They *insisted* that we use an instant
message client to ask questions rather than go to each
other's desks. The first time I got up and walked over
to a programmer's desk, I was severely chastised.

So I started using instant messenger. Invariably, after
we'd typed three sentences back and forth, the developer
got up and came over to my desk, but it kept them happy,
so WTF, y'know.

Sometimes, life makes absolutely no sense at all.
;-)
