Ok, well once you're done being thankful for being employed, etc. etc.,
you're still left with being bored, which is very unpleasant (for some folks
anyway).
Are there other places on your project's "food-chain" where you can get
involved? I've been fortunate enough to talk my way into writing
requirements and design documents at the beginning stages of the project,
all the way to working with marketing and training to make sure they have
the correct technical content to do their magic. Not only is it a break in
the routine, but I've learned new skills as a result to boot.
Are there any other projects within the company you might be able to work
on? I've never been a contractor, so I don't know how that world works, but
are there other divisions or projects you've noticed could use a hand?
Any new technologies you've been interested in learning? Last year, I
decided to finally take a serious look at XML/XSL, and ended up
incorporating it into our documentation process.
Also, I'm one of those lucky people who have an excellent relationship with
my boss, to the point where in situations like this, I can go to him and say
"look, I'm in a lull right now, got anything you think I can tackle?".
Doesn't work for everyone, but like I said, I'm lucky
