Hi Salan,
As Geoff mentioned, page ranges are particularly
important when concepts are being explained over
several pages. I've also used page ranges when
indexing procedures, function definitions (in
API documents), and tables of data.
It is definitely double the effort to create page
ranges in FrameMaker, since you have to create a
startrange marker and an endrange marker.
However,if you are working with a fairly stable
document structure, in my experience it is very
easy to maintain page ranges after they are set up.
That said, if you are making radical changes to the
document structure, it's easy to delete page range
markers or accidentally move endrange markers in
front of startrange markers. Testing page ranges
in an index while the document structure is in
flux is more aggro than it's worth.
If you can do it, wait until you have established
your desired document structure before you add
or fix your page ranges.
Of course, indexing often suffers because we fail
to negotiate enough time to do it properly. If
you can't add page ranges during a release cycle,
plan to do it in the lull after the release. It's
the kind of job that's you'll enjoy more after
the pressure is off.
