Isn't this a good place for a note? Document the procedure as it is performed
successfully. Use a note to inform the user of any bizarre behaviour of the
cancel button or other work-around information if the user has made a mistake in
the procedure.
For example, if the user has just finished filling out a long form and selecting
cancel dumps all their entry work, perhaps selecting OK and then correcting the
errors is the best approach. If cancel returns them to the previous dialog, then
a note can calm their fears of losing work if they know they've made a mistake
or would rather go back and check their data before committing with an OK. If
this information is in a sidebar or other form of note it will serve two
puposes. It will hold the hand of those users that need support and will stay
out of the way of those that don't.
