Yup, you've earned it. It took me almost 6 months to get the position I have now; the last time I was out of work, it took 3 weeks.
As long as you can make it on unemployment, savings, etc. if this is what you want, go for it. But consider a possibility I was looking at before the offer came (and the offer came two MONTHS after the second interviews)- I was thinking of looking at temp work as a clerical person, phone person, typist, whatever, and trying for places that might, when things eased up, be looking for a technical writer. Then you're there, and they know you.
I think one of the nicest things about being over the half-century mark is that I finally know I'm competent, and that I can take care of myself.
Yes, the market is dead, but we just hired a new person (finally), and there are other people out there who are finding spots -- slowly, painfully, yes, but they are coming.
