I've not had any personal experience of Sharepoint Portal Server, but there
are several newsgroups about it on the Microsoft news server. Reading the
last couple of weeks of questions there should give you a pretty good idea
of what real-life purposes people are putting it to, and what sorts of
problems are common.

Go here and look up the newsgroups with "sharepoint" in the name

news://msnews.microsoft.com
