Here's an idea. When I was between regular tech writing positions quite a few years ago, I created a little brochure using a PaperDirect blank and sent out about 700 of them. I got about a 5% response rate (pretty good for direct mail) and landed a couple of projects. At the time, I didn't think of myself as "between regular jobs".... I considered it the beginning of my new tech writing company/service. (then a regular job came along and I grabbed it). The point is that advertising works and companies NEVER see an ad for an independent tech writer, because (almost) no one advertises.
