I was going to chime in with the same opinion, but stopped to check
Webster's first. To my astonishment, I found that Webster treats both
words as absolutely synonymous - so apparently, the people are right who
claim that either spelling is correct.

However, I nonetheless believe that there are typical spellings for
different meanings of the word, in particular "ensure" for "make sure"
(as others have already suggested in response to Tom's question) and
"insure" for "indemnify against damage".
