Thanks for the suggestion. However, at the suggestion of another list member, I called the local public library's reference desk.
Between the librarian and me we were able to convince ourselves that the quote is from Beecher, but we couldn't find a specific citation.
The reason Marcus Aurelius and Joseph Conrad got into the mix is that they each had quotes on the subject of ambition that happened to fall on either side of the Beecher quote on one Web page or another, and someone else, scarfing up quotes for his or her own Web site, grabbed the wrong author's name to go with the quote in question. I was able to find the specific pages where this mis-copying had taken place, so I'm confident that the only author the quote is seriously attributed to is Beecher. Further evidence that it is Beecher is internal to the quote--the misuse of which instead of that, for example, and the overall pomposity of its diction and complexity of its construction.
Nonetheless, I can't locate the exact citation. So if there are any Beecher aficionados out there, ....
