The interface to a basket is pretty straightforward, which is the way it
should be with a manual. Are the processes repeatable for the basket makers,
and do they check each other's work?

I reject both the premise and the conclusion. People engage in craft in
groups of varying sizes all the time. (I toured a basket factory in Ohio
that employs, IIRC, about 8,000 craftspeople.) And to the extent that a
craftsperson takes pride in the work he or she produces, I submit the
quality control exceeds that found in non-craft production (where a system
is substituted for a conscience and people are thought of as fungible
resources).
