Finally a topic I can say I am completely knowledgeable on - being a horse
trainer (sport = Eventing) and all!
Anyway, a hand is the measurement used for measuring an equine. A hand does
equal 4 inches. However, a horse is not measured from the shoulder, but in
fact from the top of withers (the base of the neck) to the ground. A pony is
anything under 14.2 hands. These measurements are universal, I don't believe
the standards to differ from country to country, but perhaps certain breeds
would have a standard.
