I have used frames (not Framemaker) in my template for quite a few years to achieve sideheads in Word. This works in version 2000 and the one previous; I don't know about other versions such as XP.

===============================

Here we go.. (Warning: somewhat geeky MSWord stuff follows)

My basic page layout has a white space column on the left of each page of 1.5" with a .5" gutter.

1st and 2nd level headings and a few other styles have a negative left margin of -1.5" so that they occupy the entire page width.

My "Sidehead" style has a frame horizontally positioned in the white space left column with the following frame settings...

Text Wrapping: None

Horizontal Position: Left
Horizontal Relative to: Page
Horizontal Distance from Text: 0.13"

Size Width: Exactly At:1.25"
Height: Auto

Vertical Position: 0"
Vertical Relative to: Paragraph
Vertical Distance to Text: 0.13"
Move with Text: checked
Lock Anchor: not checked
