What I liked best about using tables in this way (with which we created a scholar's margin in Word 5.1 on the Macintosh a decade or so ago) was that it spared us using Keep With Next to control pagination.

We just defined all table rows to Disallow Break Across Pages, then put paragraphs that needed to stay together into the same row. Voila! No orphaned list items, no widowed introductions, no divorces among figures and captions. :)
