The first time I recall seeing the expression was as the title of a book by one of the founders of the garden supplies purveyor Smith & Hawken. It was a book about the idea of building a business organically, with appropriate human values with respect to employees, customers, the community and the environment. In that context, the title made sense. I don't know whether the author was the coiner of the phrase or not.
