The archives are filled with discussions about how Word and graphics don't
play nicely with each other. You've just encountered a key example.

In this instance, you'll probably have better luck by pasting the graphic
into a graphics program such as Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop. Modify it
there, reduce the number of colors to as small an amount as possible (256,
or, even better, 16), and save it as a GIF.

Then use Insert, Picture, From File to put it back where it came from.
