The "normal" work week, as defined by company policy (not reality of hours work) in software companies is typically 40 actual hours worked throughout the U.S. and Canada, from what I have seen. For other companies it might be 40 hours including lunch or 37.5 actual hours (e.g. in the medical industry).

The reality of actual hours worked... typically when things are under control I work 40 - 45 hours per week. At these times during crunch time I might work up to 50 hours per week. However, I have also found that there often appears a time when I need to work far longer (e.g. 60 hours or even 80 hours), and for weeks or even months. Eventually, however, my manager understands that I need additional help, and the workload becomes more managable again.
