Very cute. ;-)

The defaults for the mother board should work. And hard drives are
autodetected now by the BIOS, which is almost cheating. I use to carry the
little blue book with the settings for all hard drives, as well as the error
beeps and what they meant. It fit in my tool kit that also went with me
everywhere.

In my second and last salaried job, that was almost literally what happened.
The mother board and the hard drive were in, you just had to put in the
cards and get it all working, including installing the software, Win 3.11
included. The parts were dropped on your desk by a very overworked systems
manager who later came back and got you connected to the network by
installing the software.

I thought it was cool to put the machine together and I enjoyed seeing what
was going in my box so I would know what I actually had. The other writer
apparently burst into tears when the parts were dropped on her desk. Someone
took pity on her and helped.

I just had a flash, about being a new writer at Sharon's
place:

S.B-H: Well, that's the tour, and you've met everybody.
This is where you'll be sitting. Stationery cabinet is
just over there. Your phone line should be activated
before Noon. The network drop is already live.
You ready to start?"

New-kid: Um... won't I be needing a PC?

S.B-H: [Slapping forehead] Oh, of course! Sorry. [Bekons...]
Here. This is the parts and tools room. Grab what you
need and start constructing. See Angela for the software
CDs when you get that far. E-mail me when you're ready
to start earning your paycheck. Well, gotta run. Have fun.

N-k: [Now wearing a 'deer-in-the-headlights/what-have-
I-gotten-myself-into look on face] Wait a sec... I don't
see any manuals. You know, for mother-board connectors,
jumper settings, that sort of thing?
