First, if I were you, I wouldn't worry about the title. Vague and grandiose titles seem the norm in high-tech in general and tech-writing in particular. Having had my share of them, I've concluded that they don't mean much when job-hunting one way or the other. And, if I'm wrong, your resume can easily be written to make clear exactly what your duties are. I don't think that HR lingers as long over the job titles as over the descriptions.

Second, don't worry about your career as such. Tech-writing is hardly a direct path to the CEO's office. In most companies, tech-writing's a ladder with only two or three rungs. That being so, thinking in term of a career is usually a waste of effort. If you want to be more than a writer, you'll need to branch out into other fields, such as marketing.

Since the pay increase isn't much, either, I think the real question is job satisfaction. Ask yourself: Does added responsibility appeal to you, or not? Nothing else really matters.
