If I had to bet money, I would say that the poster who made the comment about "the
state of Canada" is not a native English speaker. Furthermore, as Canada is an
independent nation, they are also an independent state. (I'll leave looking up
definitions as an exercise for the student.) Thus the poster may have made an
unusual word choice, but it was not an incorrect one as the poster did not say or
imply that Canada was a subdivision of the U.S.

I suspect that our beloved Canadian listers are showing their sensitivity to the
possibility that they might be mistaken for their beloved neighbors to their
immediate south.
