TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I would love to be able to include information gathered from observing users in their "native environment." I've had the opportunity to go on one site visit, and my perceptions of our users changed dramatically because of it. I wonder how my outlook would change with more such visits......Luckily, I _may_ be going to the Innovative Government Forum later this month. If I do, you can bet that I'll be doing the particpant-observer routine!!! hehehehe :-)
It's hard convincing the higher-ups of the merit of site visits though. It seems like they only see it as an immediate loss. Can anyone offer tips on "justifying" the expense of a site visit, contextual inquiry, and user observations, preferably in upper-management speak? :-)
