They most certainly are. But if you're dumping your
resume up there and hoping people will find you, then
yeah, it won't help. Set aside about 2 hours of time
and really dig into Monster.com, sign up for the
advanced features, configure every possible bell and
whistle, and then HUNT.

EVERYONE is using sites like Monster. You need to set
your resume apart from the rest. How?

1) Content. Include good content. Instead of "I'm a
tech writer looking for work", your resume should be
saying "I'm well-versed in X, Y, and Z and can
leverage those skills to really kick butt". Well, you
get the idea, I hope.

2) Keywords. No one is specifically looking for
FrameMaker, HTML Help, and the like (not for
non-contract gigs, anyway). Include buzzwords from the
industries you're interested in working in.

3) Premium services. Pretty much every job/resume bank
has premium services. Buy into them. They put your
resume at the top of the search results lists.

4) Look into all aspects of the posting board you're
using and really take advantage of their service offerings.
