I share your concern, but wonder how much safer OE is. It seems to me that
the big "crack" is HTML mail.

At home, I'm back on a dialup connection and often download my mail,
disconnect, and then read it (in the preview pane). It's astonishing how
many HTML mail messages trigger an attempt to reestablish the modem
connection. Of course, most of the time, they're just trying to retrieve a
referenced graphic -- but even just that can confirm to the sender (spammer)
that your email address is valid.

Lockergnome Windows Daily
(http://www.lockergnome.com/issues/daily/20020813.html) recommended an
Outlook add-in that I intend to try out: PocketKnife Peek
(http://www.xintercept.com/pkpeek.htm), described as "an Outlook add-in for
screening your e-mail as plain text before opening it in Outlook. The add-in
can be used to view all Outlook message formats, but is aimed particularly
at averting the threats lurking in HTML mail."

Sounds promising. Outlook users might want to take a look.
