The rest of what you said is arguably true, but if your graphics look like crap
there are only two possibilities: (1) you have Acrobat set in such a way that it
produces graphics that don't please you, or (2) they looked like crap before you
started. Neither is inherently the fault of Acrobat. Do you find them
unpleasing on the screen or in print, or both?
You can tell Acrobat everything from "turn this into a 72dpi JPG as small as
possible with low quality" to "leave it as a TIFF". Look in Distiller's menus:
Settings->Job Options->Compression.
