Blessing counting time from across the Atlantic:
- A job I enjoy at a stable, successful and respected company, with an
official 37.5 hour week, and the usual benefits of UK employment (including
25 days holiday, 12 weeks sick leave, and free private medical care).
- A modern, tastefully and fully-furnished two-bedroom house (all to
myself!), less than half a mile from the office (ten minute walk/cycle,
three minute drive if it's raining), for less than 30% of my nett salary.
It's about three miles from the centre of Cambridge, which is a very
pleasant place to live, and a five-minute walk into the countryside. If I
get bored here, London is only a 45-minute train ride away...
- A still-relatively-booming economy (but nowhere near as good as it was,
of course).
I used to live in South Africa and, about five years ago, very seriously
considered moving to the Seattle area. In hindsight, I think I made a
better choice. Not US-bashing at all - just interesting contrasting the
differing lifestyles... ;)

Please respond to "John
Fleming"
Thanks for giving me another handful of reasons to count my blessings.
My modest one-bedroom apartment is setting me back the equivalent of about
$400US per month. Water, heat and electricity are included in the rent.
I live a twenty-five minute walk from work.
And as long as I don't really screw up, it looks like I can work where I am
for the forseeable future.
Sure, the work isn't exactly technical writing, but the bills are paid, I
can put a bit of money aside every month, and since this is the second time
I have worked for this unit in this department in this organization, it
gives me a wonderful, built-in reference on my resume next time I am
hunting
for work.
