David-

If you're working on long documents and want to do this as a global change
...

First check your import filter to see if there is an option to turn off this
behavior.

If you're cutting and pasting, use Paste Special and paste as unformatted
text and add the styles later.

Otherwise, the following method will work if there are two para marks
between paragraphs (try this on a small document first to get the hang of it
and tweak it if necessary):

1. Open find and replace.
2. Type "^p^p" (exclude quotes of course) in the Find what field.
3. Type "@@@" in the Replace with field.
4. Replace all.
This changes the para markers you want to save.
5. Type "^p" in the Find what field.
6. Leave the Replace with field blank or type a space if it will be needed
to separate words.
7. Replace all.
This will remove all the end of line para markers.
8. Type "@@@" in the Find field.
9. Type "^p" in the Replace with field
10. Replace all.

Try this a couple of times on copies that you can discard and you'll find
you can tweak things to make the process pretty straightforward.
