Sure, works like a charm. Just connect a standard monitor to a PowerBook,
put it to sleep and wake it up again. The PowerBook supports resolutions
of up to 1920 by 1440 pixels on external displays, plus you keep the full
use of the built-in LCD.

No additional hardware or software is required; neither is any kind of
configuration beyond choosing the desired resolution, refresh rate and
color depth.
